Use of No Follow Link to Wikipedia

Wikipedia which is powered by MediaWiki software was soon equipped with no follow link support after the initial announcement in 2005. The option on most Wikipedias were enabled.

The English Wikipedia was one of the prominent exceptions. At first, after the discussion, the rel=”nofollow” was decide not to be used in articles but to use a URL blacklist instead.

Thus, English Wikipedia added to the scores of the pages it linked to, and anticipated editors to link to relevant pages. In May 2006, a patch to MediaWiki software allowed to permit no follow link selectively in namespaces.

This function was used on pages that aren’t considered to be part of the actual encyclopedia, such as discussion pages and editor’s resources.
