It’s refreshing to hear your comments. You have correctly articulated the purpose and meaning of a recession. As a former business owner I had to go through a few of these myself and it makes you downsize, cut the fat, and focus on productivity and profits.

While mergers and acquisitions generally restructure the industrial landscape some companies simply have to close their doors if they can’t regain profitability. If a company can’t renegotiate contracts and reorganize successfully it will simply have to sell off its assets or declare bankruptcy advice.

The GM situation wasn’t a true bankruptcy. It was a government takeover! We’ve never seen such abuse of power by our govenment. While they tell us it was needed they didn’t allow for the normal steps spelled out above and for share holders to have a say in the matter.

You cannot just pump nitric acid into PE powder and cause an explosion. The process of making PETN is not one that you can just pull off in your crotch area. Analysis On “Another Chance for Small Business Loans?”

It seems to me right now that there is still a lot of uncertainty in the market which is causing lending to stay tight. With the low interest rates, a financial disaster is in the making in the form of heavy inflation which could very well threaten businesses, both large and small business advice, but more so the small businesses because they do not have the sophistication to offset inflation risks through financial positioning.

Should inflation happen outstanding loans become a huge liability to banks because they are either fixed-rate, which means the bank loses money (depending on how lending from the Fed works) or they are variable-rate which threatens the business’ liquidity. Either way, until more is know about the direction of the economy and monetary policy, I think banks are wise to be highly picky about their loans.

On a separate note, I do not think the Fed will increase its rates until small business lending picks up due to political pressure and the fact that inflation measures significantly lag money supply growth, which will not happen until lending resumes.
