Adult dating online disaster

I find adult dating online to be scarry.  How do you know that what the person is stating about themselves to be true?  I prefer to be introduced by someone who knows the person.  Though you know your friends to a certain level, atleast some familiarity with the person goes a much longer way with me than meeting a complete stranger through an online service.  I see these commercials all the time of people who meet each other online and how happy they are.  I actually wonder if there are any disaster stories of people who claim to be single and are actually married.
