Macro lens overview

May 13th, 2010 by admin

A camera fitted with a macro lens is able to take crisp, detailed photographs of small objects, or excellent close-up views of larger ones. A macro lens is one built specifically to allow close-up photographs, and may be made in one of several different ways, including extenders and reversing lenses. Most digital cameras also have a macro setting allowing close-up, quality photography.

Macro lenses for film cameras tend to have a very limited depth of field – that is, there is a very narrow ‘band’ of space where pictures taken with the camera will be clear. The camera must therefore be set up carefully at exactly the right distance to permit a good photograph to be taken. Sometimes, the lens must be almost touching – or actually touching – the object that is being photographed. Digital cameras tend to have a larger depth of field when in macro setting, making them somewhat easier to use for close-up photography.
