Accessing my PC remotely seems impossible

If I hear one more person tell me how easy it is to use remote access software to access your PC remotely I think I’m going to have to scream. I’ve pretty much tried every kind of trick and tool I can think of but I still can’t seem to be able to do it the way they talk about on TV. Maybe I have some settings that aren’t right, or may be my computer has a virus or something like that, by this stuff doesn’t seem to work for me the way it does for everyone else. What gives?
